Man seeking ride to Upper Darby stabbed, robbed of cash, phones, police say

A man told police that he was stabbed by a driver who had offered to give him a ride from Philadelphia to 69th Street in Upper Darby on March 18.
The two agreed on $15 for the ride, according to police.
When the car, a black SUV, approached Market and 69th streets, the victim told the driver that he could be dropped off at the top of the hill.
The victim told Upper Darby police he had about $500, according to an affidavit of probable cause. The victim took his money out of his pocket to pay the driver, who saw that he had a lot more cash than $15. The driver allegedly pulled a knife and told the victim to give him all the money, the probable cause stated.
When the victim refused, the driver allegedly threatened to kill him, said police.
The victim and the driver began to struggle over the money and the driver began to attempt to stab him in his shoulder blade while continuing to drive, the affidavit of probable cause said.
The victim tried to put the vehicle’s gearshift into park so he could escape, but he couldn’t get the door open, possibly due to child safety locks.
The SUV continued up Chatham Road, turned right onto Chestnut Street toward 89th Street, according to police.
The victim then got the window down and began trying to climb out of the car when it was at an intersection, police said. He waited before jumping out so he could reduce any injuries. But before he could jump, the SUV struck another vehicle on the passenger side as the victim was hanging out, said police.
Detectives found surveillance video that corroborated the victim’s statement, the probable cause said.
“The right side of the victim’s body appears to strike the white vehicle during the intentional collision,” the probable cause said. The incident occurred at about 4:22 p.m., per the reports.
The victim, who was interviewed at Lankenau Medical Center, said the driver took $500, an Apple iPhone 16, and an Apple iPhone 11, for a total loss of $1,400, the probable cause said.
Police arrested Andre I. Marshall, 30, of Philadelphia, and charged him with numerous crimes, according to court records. Police were able to trace Marshall’s vehicle through surveillance video that showed his license plate, the probable cause stated.
Marshall will face charges, which include: first-degree felony robbery-threat of immediate serious Injury; second-degree felony robbery-inflict threat imminent bodily injury; third-degree robbery, taking property from another with force; misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking movable property; misdemeanor receiving stolen property; misdemeanor simple assault; first-degree felony aggravated assault attempts to cause serious bodily injury or causes injury with extreme indifference; misdemeanor recklessly endangering another person, misdemeanor terroristic threats; and misdemeanor possession of a weapon.
And police also cited Marshall for traffic-related offenses.
District Justice Tammi L. Forbes set bail at 10% of $100,0000 on March 19. Marshall, who was unable to post bail, is being held at the Delaware County jail.
Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. This report was compiled from court records.
