UDPD reminds drivers of township’s parking laws

If you’ve lived nearly anywhere in the Philadelphia region, you’re familiar with the constant struggle: parking. In Upper Darby, just outside the city’s limits, the battle remains. Parking can be tough, but if everyone is able to abide by township ordinances (not to mention the Commonwealth’s law), things can run more smoothly for all.

According to the Upper Darby Township Police Department, a reminder was necessary. The police took to Facebook to gently remind residents of area regulations.

Citing Section 3354 of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, UDTPD posted to social media to “remind residents and visitors about proper parking on our streets.”

Vehicles must be parked parallel to the curb, in the direction of traffic, and within 12 inches of the curb,” said the department’s post online. “This law helps keep our streets safe, clear for emergency vehicles, and accessible for everyone who travels through our neighborhoods.”

The post received a wide variety of engagement from township residents. But police said that the law must be followed, or those illegally parking will face consequences.

“This is an enforceable violation, and officers will be addressing vehicles that are not parked in compliance,” said the post. “We ask everyone to please be mindful of these parking rules and help keep our community safe and orderly.”

Some on social media noted they’d already seen the enforcement taking place in their neighborhoods.

Gail Herrera said she’d observed ticketing along Berry Avenue.

“First time in 10 years I’ve seen a traffic person in Delco,” she said on Facebook.

While some pointed at other areas of concern, others chimed in to thank the police for their work.

Denise Burn posted that it is a law that “should be enforced throughout all townships.” Barb Frat agreed, stating “First of all, thank you for your service to the community. I was taught this in 10th grade in Driver’s Ed at UDHS.”
