Upper Darby Royals break school records, finish strong at PTFCA State Championships
Upper Darby High School athletes hit the ground running at the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association Indoor State Championships at Penn State University earlier this month.
Tajai Powell notched third place in the 200-meter dash, breaking a school record that she set previously with a time of 25.25. Janaye Haye vaulted to ninth place in the triple jump and Kadi Golembiewski placed 14th in the 400-meter event.
Additionally, the 4×200 relay team of Ovviya Lauderdale, Powell, Marziah Jones and Golembiewski raced to another third-place finish, breaking the 2011 school record. Lauderdale, Powell, Zi’yahh Mclean-Dixon and Golembiewski then capped off the meet with a strong 13th-place finish in the 4×400 relay.
For the boys, Joshua Sharp earned third-place medal in the 800-meter race, posting a season-best time and a U.S. No. 25 ranking, while Kenny Virtue Jr. netted 10th place in the 60-meter hurdles.
The boys 4×400 relay team — Josiah Gray, David Benda, Charlie Hegarty and Sharp — posted a season-best 3:21.70 and finished fifth overall, and the boys 4×200 relay team notched 17th place.
Overall in the PTFCA State Championships, the Upper Darby boys team finished 24th and the girls team took 34th place out of 266 participating schools.
